Slate magazine’s final electoral map projection puts 273 electoral votes in the “safe Dem” column.  There’s a very good chance this election will be the sort that my generation has never seen: one that is decided early.

As an economist, I believe that competition drives the parties to adapt and market themselves to evenly divide the electorate (thank you, game theory).  But something happened this time to give us a different result: The GOP miscalculated.  It’s like Coca-Cola’s experiment with “New Coke”–they simply misjudged what people wanted, and they are going to pay, big time.  Like Coca-Cola, the GOP has enough brand recognition to bounce back from this, but it’s always odd to see a big player make such a huge misstep.

I am a newly-religious follower of Ross Douthat’s blog on conservative politics, because I’m very curious to see whose heads roll, which new leaders take the helm, and how the Republican platform changes to attract more voters.  The next 8 years should be very interesting, and very fun.

Time magazine lists the hours the polls are open on Tuesday, and whether early voting was allowed, for each state.  The states most of you will likely be interested in:

Colorado: 9am to 9pm EST. Early voting took place from October 20 to October 31.

Florida: 7am to 7pm EST. Early voting took place from October 20 to November 2.

Georgia: 7am to 7pm EST. Early voting took place from September 22 to October 31.

Indiana: 6am to 6pm EST. Early voting took place from October 6 to November 3 (noon).

Iowa: 8am to 10pm EST. Early voting takes place from September 25 to November 4.

Minnesota: 8am to 9pm EST. For those with valid excuses, early voting takes place October 5 to November 4.

Missouri: 7am to 8pm EST. No Early Voting.

Nevada: 10am to 10pm EST. Early voting took place from October 18 to October 31.

New Hampshire: Times vary at polling places, with some sites opening as early as 6am and some closing as late as 8pm EST. No Early Voting.

New Mexico: 9am to 9pm EST. Early voting took place from October 20 to November 3.

North Carolina: 6:30am to 7:30pm EST. Early voting took place from October 16 to November 1.

North Dakota: Most polling sites are open 10am to 8pm EST, but times vary throughout the state. Early voting took place from October 20 to November 3.

Ohio: 6:30am to 7:30pm EST. Early voting took place from September 30 to November 3.

Pennsylvania: 7am to 8pm EST. No Early Voting.

Virginia: 6am to 7pm EST. For those with valid excuses, early voting took place September 22 to November 1.

Wisconsin: 8am to 9pm EST. Early voting took place from October 13 to November 3.
